The 5 Ws of Business Tax Receipts

  1. What is a Business Tax Receipt?

A Business Tax Receipt (BTR) is a license issued by the local government which allows you to conduct your business legally in the city or county the license is registered under.

Not all jurisdictions call a Business Tax Receipt by that name. Some call them business tax certificates, business tax licenses, or Occupational License. Many counties and cities no longer use the term “Occupational License” since it has created a lot of confusion with state level licensing.

  1. Who needs one?

Generally all businesses require a Business Tax Receipt, but often these are regulated by state statutes. It is important that you verify with the local government on the requirements and to find out if you qualify for an exemption.

  1. When should I get one?

Business tax receipts are often required before opening a business in many cities and counties. One of the first steps in registering a business is obtaining a Business Tax Receipt.

  1. Where do I get this?

Municipalities handle this differently. If you would like to apply for a Business Tax Receipt or obtain a license, you should contact your local government office. In many cases, other departments are involved in the approval process, so it is important to inquire about the entire process beforehand. City offices may provide services in person only, by appointment only, or even online.

  1. Why do I need a Business Tax Receipt?

Business Tax Receipts are required by many local governments in order to ensure compliance with zoning laws, safety regulations, and operational procedures. Local governments are able to track businesses for taxation and revenue collection. Depending on the bank, landlord, or vendor, a Business Tax Receipt may be required to open an account or lease commercial space.

Business Tax Receipts are especially important for verifying compliance before opening a business.
